THE PROJECT

Bulla Hill Railway is a much-loved community organisation run entirely by dedicated volunteers, bringing miniature train rides, events and family experiences to the local community.

The website has been an ongoing digital project for almost a decade, evolving as the organisation, its events and the needs of its visitors and volunteers have changed.

THE BRIEF

When DESC Designs took over the website, the existing platform was outdated and difficult to navigate, with functionality that no longer met the needs of either the organisation or its visitors.

The goal was to create a modern, easy-to-use website that would:

• Make it simple for visitors to find upcoming train running days and events
• Streamline online bookings
• Make general and group enquiries easier
• Improve the experience on mobile devices
• Give volunteers a straightforward way to keep information current
• Provide a secure and reliable platform for ongoing use

THE APPROACH

The website was completely redesigned with simplicity, usability and community engagement at the heart of the project.

A clear structure makes important information easy to find, particularly train running dates, events, bookings and visitor information. Online booking functionality was introduced to make planning a visit more convenient, while improved enquiry forms provide dedicated pathways for general questions and group bookings.

The site was also developed with volunteers in mind. Content needs to be easy to update without requiring a technical background, allowing the committee to keep event information and operating details current.

Mobile responsiveness, website security and ongoing maintenance were incorporated into the project to ensure the website remains reliable and functional as technology and organisational requirements evolve.

Rather than treating the website as a one-off project, DESC Designs has continued to work with Bulla Hill Railway over the years, undertaking three strategic website makeovers.

Each redevelopment has responded to changing technology, visitor expectations and the organisation's evolving needs — extending the life and usefulness of the website rather than starting from scratch each time.
