OVERVIEW
Steve from Expro QLD contacted me after being referred by Conetix, our preferred hosting provider. He was experiencing ongoing issues with his website that were affecting its stability and preventing proper updates. What began as a technical troubleshooting request quickly uncovered the need for a more strategic and long-term solution.
THE BRIEF
Steve’s primary concern was that whenever updates were attempted within WordPress, the website would crash or become unstable. This meant the site couldn’t be maintained safely, leaving it outdated and vulnerable.
He needed a solution that would:
- Restore stability and functionality
- Allow updates to occur without breaking the site
- Maintain all existing content (as it was still relevant and accurate)
- Provide longevity and future compatibility
- Improve security measures where needed
THE APPROACH
Once access to the WordPress dashboard was provided, it became clear the site had not been updated for a considerable amount of time. Outdated plugins, theme limitations, and compatibility issues were the root cause of the instability.
Rather than applying temporary patches, I recommended a full rebuild under the latest WordPress framework using a premium, fully licensed theme — Divi 5 by Elegant Themes — ensuring ongoing support, stability, and future-proofing.
Conetix arranged a staging site so the rebuild could be completed safely without disrupting the live website. This allowed for a smooth development process behind the scenes.
As all the information on the existing site was still current and relevant, the rebuild focused on transferring content into a newer, more polished and structured format. The result was a refined version of the original — familiar in content, but significantly improved in performance and presentation.
Additional work included:
- Re-establishing Google Security reCAPTCHA (as previous keys had been lost)
- Updating imagery for a more modern feel
- Refining layouts for improved user experience
- Ensuring full compatibility with current WordPress standards
THE OUTCOME
The entire project was completed within two days from start to finish.
Steve now has a stable, secure, and maintainable website built on a modern framework. Updates can be completed confidently without fear of crashes, and the site has the flexibility to evolve in the future.
Importantly, the essence of the original website remains intact — it is still recognisably Expro QLD — just cleaner, more secure, and built for longevity.
